Verona School is a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) with an enrolment of 42 students in Years 5 to 12, who are experiencing difficulties in managing their behaviour and emotions in a regular school setting. Students enter the program through the access request process, and over 90% of students have an emotional disturbance diagnosis, that may also include Autism Spectrum Disorder. The school incorporates six classrooms and an assembly/recreation room and is located at Fairfield East. The staff work at developing positive communications and supportive relationships with students, parents, carers, external agencies and other schools. Each student has a personalised learning plan to assist in his or her learning. The school and community maintain high expectations for successful reintegration into their referring school and have well developed relationships with a multitude of schools across South Western Sydney. The school supports the transition of all students in the school and all staff are committed to developing the individual strengths of students. A diverse range of programs are provided to students, including visual arts, gardening, sport, food technology, ICT and music, which are supported by the teachers and school learning support officers in the school. The school has positive relationships with TAFE and other industries, with many students completing TAFE certified qualifications through school or TAFE delivered programs. Stage Six students complete their HSC through Sydney Distance Education High School, with the school’s first cohort successfully completing their HSC in 2018.
